Why Laser?

There are many hair removal options, all with their own pros and cons. I believe laser is the best option because it is permanent hair reduction/elimination with little pain. Do read on and decide on the option that is best for you.

Pro: inexpensive, painless
Con: hair grows back quickly, dark hair follicles can be seen under skin
Possible Side Effects: ingrown hairs, rashes

Shaving removes body hair with a sharp razor, cutting close to the skin. The immediate results are smooth skin, but the results do not typically last longer than a day or two.

Pro: mid-range price, hair grows back slower
Cons: painful
Possible Side Effects: ingrown hairs, skin redness and irritation, small chance of burns

Waxing removes body hair when warm wax that was applied to the body is ripped off with a cloth, taking the hair with it. Waxing is effective and you can expect smooth skin for 2-6 weeks, however because it rips hair out by the follicles it can be quite painful. If you are not keen on ripping bandaids off your body waxing is not for you.

Pro: Permanent hair removal for every hair treated
Cons: Very slow process, painful, expensive
Possible Side Effects: Skin can get discoloured if it is done improperly

Electrolysis is a process of removing hair one by one by applying  electric current with a very fine needle-shaped electrode into each hair follicle to destroy the root. Electrolysis is the only method approved by the FDA for permanent hair removal.  It does require multiple sessions to achieve best possible results and permanent hair removal is not 100% guaranteed for everyone. Bent follicles, often a result of previous waxing and tweezing, can make electrolysis harder.

Laser Hair Removal

Pro: possibility of permanent and complete hair reduction, no pain (with Alma Soprano XL laser),
Con: can be expensive
Possible Side Effects: rash, extremely small chance (with Alma Soprano XL laser) of burning and scarring

Lasers work by sending a pulse of light into the hair follicles, burning them in place. The process is effective during the anagen (active growth) stage of the hair growth cycle. At any point approximately 20% of a person’s hair are in this stage so to get to eliminate 100% of hair several treatments spaced weeks apart are necessary.

Pro: mid-range price, hair grows back slower
Cons: painful
Possible Side Effects: ingrown hairs, skin redness and irritation

Sugaring is similar in process to waxing only the wax is replaced by a paste or ‘sugar’ usually made from natural ingredients. Sugaring is less likely to irritate sensitive skin and the likelihood of burns is even smaller because the ‘sugar’ temperature is lower.
